[Maurice] Part five of an occasional series: The Irregulars

Here’s the final installment of my look at my Maurice army, which also bears a very strong resemblance to my Might and Reason Austrian army. This time, I’m going to be focusing on my irregulars – Grenzers and Hussars. Since this is the final installment, I’ll also be showing a picture of my command stands – Commander in Chief, Notables, Sub-Generals, etc.

First up are my Grenzers, who are Croatian light infantry from the frontier. As you can see from the basing, these are much more spread out than the regular troops I’ve posted pics of before:

Grenzers

Grenzers

There are four units of Grenzers in total here, from two regiments. The four bases in the top left make up two units, and are both from the Karlstädter-Lykaner Grenzer. At the start of the Seven Years War, there were three battalions, but one of these was a depot battalion, so each unit depicted is a field battalion. I’ve used about 6 figures per base (as opposed to 24 on my regular bases) so that it’s immediately obvious that they are irregulars.

These particular Grenzer wear red all over apart from their dark green shakos, and were part of von Loudon’s corps. They have no standard – Grenzers didn’t carry colours. Their neighbours on the bottom left are the Karlstädter-Ottochaner Grenzer, also recruited from Croatia and fulfilling the same role. Like the Lykaner Grenzer, they consisted of two field battalions and a depot battalion, so my two units here represent the two field battalions again. They wear mostly red, but with a blue dolman and cuffs and a black shako.

I also have four units of Hussars, shown here:

Hussars

Hussars

Like their infantry comrades, these are irregulars, and thus sparsely based with more rugged elements (bits of cork for rocks, more scrubby brush, etc). I’ve gone for five figures per base to show they’re irregulars. All four units fought at Hochgiersdorf, as did all the units I’ve represented so far.

The first unit are the Kaiser Franz I Hussars, which is conveniently Hussar regiment number 1. They fought under Count Franz Moritz Lacy at Hochgiersdorf.

They wear dark blue uniforms with black fur trim, yellow braids and a light brown kolpack with a dark blue bag.

The second unit are conveniently the second Hussar regiment, the Nadasdy Hussars. They were raised in Slovakia and were the first Hussar regiment raised by the Austrians. They fought under Nauendorf.

They often fought in the vanguard, and captured several enemy colours. They wear light green uniforms with black fur trim apart from dark blue trousers and light brown kolpacks with a light green bag.

My third regiment are the 3rd regiment, Palffy Hussars (spotting a pattern here yet?) of von Loudon’s corps.

This regiment wears a light blue uniform with black trim and red cuffs, and the light brown kolpack with a red bag. They fought under Nauendorf alomgside the Nadasdy Hussars.

My fourth and final Hussar regiment is, conveniently, the 4th Kalnoky Hussars. They were raised in Transylvania and fought under von Bethlen’s corps.

They wear light blue uniforms with black trim apart from their red trousers, and wear the traditional light brown kolpack with a red bag.

And finally, on to my command staff. In Maurice, you only need a stand to denote your commander in chief and any Notables you have in the field (I now have two). However, for Might and Reason, you need quite a few, and a pack from Baccus gives you quite a few options. Here they all are:

At the bottom left you can see my commander in chief, recognisable by having three figures on it rather than two as on all the other bases. You can also see in the top right a flag stuck to a penny – I use this to denote objectives in Maurice. Almost all the command staff wear white coats and red trousers, with black tricornes and gold trim.

And there you have it – my entire Maurice / Might and Reason army. Next time I might start on another of my armies unless I have a battle report to post.
